Pick Your Own Sunflowers Ideas and Information
We look forward to sunflower season every year. They look joyful and proud and seem to glow in the sunlight. We plant them every year in our flower garden and they are available for picking right now. Sunflowers are pretty distinct, and even those who don’t know a lot of flower names instantly recognize the vibrant sunflower, with its vibrant blooms and tall, sturdy stems. We know you’ll love taking some home with you! Here’s more information about picking sunflowers and what you can do when you get home.
How to Pick Your Sunflowers
When you arrive at our field, you’ll need to buy a ticket to gain entry. It’s $3 entry fee for each adult and child over 5. From there, you can pick your own flowers. We charge $12.95 per pound. You might want to bring your own scissors or pruners from home. However, we do provide some if you need some. You also might want to bring your own bucket or bag. A bucket is ideal because we can fill it with water for you after we weigh your flowers. Aim for cutting them about 12-18 inches below the bloom for sunflowers.
To specifically pick sunflowers, select the flower that you like and cut them somewhere on the stem. Note that you will want to cut them longer than you think you might need. You can always trim them again when you get home. Remember that you can pick anything in the field that we have available, not just sunflowers. If you pick a variety, it can make your bouquets so interesting!
What to Do with Your Sunflowers
Here are some ideas for what you can do with your sunflowers once you bring them home:
- Bouquets. This is a classic. Our guests love to use their flowers to make unique bouquets to enjoy all season long! You can put your arrangements in a vase, use them to make centerpieces, and more.
- Preserve them. Sunflowers preserve well. Use whatever method you want, such as drying and pressing, and that way you can enjoy them all year long!
- Wreath. You can use your sunflowers to make a wreath! Buy a wreath outline (either made of foam or twigs) from a craft store and arrange your sunflowers on them. You can glue or tie the flowers down.
- Photos. Sunflowers photograph well. Take them home and arrange them throughout your home to take some beautiful photographs.
