Gala Apples for Pick Your Own at Parlee FarmsNow that apple season is underway at Parlee Farms, it’s time to stop on by and get some! We are having a fantastic season and you can come to the farm and either pick your own or buy some freshly picked apples from the farm stand. We thought we’d share with you some tips for handling and storing the apples, as well as some of our best ideas for how to use the apples.

How to Pick Your Apples

If you decide to pick your own, we thought we’d put together a series of tips on the best way to pick and handle them. Here are the tips:

  • Know when to pick. Check our home page for information on times where you can pick the apples and what is available. We have many varieties of apples available, and we’ll let you know which apples are ready to pick.
  • Choose the best. When we open an orchard, we know that the apples are ready to pick. But still, you need to pick the ones that are right for you! Select apples that are perfectly ripe and that look the way you want them to look.
  • Picking the apples. When you see an apple you like, grasp the fruit and gently twist the apple off the tree. Don’t shake the branches, or else perfectly ripe apples will fall from the tree and go to waste.
  • Place the apples in the bag. Once picked, place them gently in the bag as to not bruise them. If you place them down too far, they’ll bruise.

How to Store the Apples

Most people take the apples home and either leave them on the counter or put them on the fridge. There’s nothing wrong with this, especially if you will use them fast. For example, if you know that you are baking a few pies with the apples.

However, if you know you want to store the apples, this isn’t the best approach. Store them in a cool, dry, dark place, such as a basement, and this will help them last even longer. They can last for several weeks.

Recipes to Use Your Apples

Over the years, we’ve published a lot of recipes. Here’s a roundup of some of our favorites:
